LABOR DAY IT IS!

Written by Dorothy A. Martin-Neville, PhD

A blessed and happy holiday to you. For some, it is simply a long weekend while for others it is a remembrance and celebration of the contributions of the working folks in both the development and achievements of the United States. It is a reminder that America is a country that has been built on the backs of millions of poor and hardworking people.

For all of us together, it also means that another summer is starting to wind down. School, in a variety of forms, has either begun or is about to begin. Not without the drama of masks or no masks for those going back into the classroom. Know your values and know that whatever they are, there is always a consequence. Own your values and the price of having them. How free you are to have a choice, even if one is a choice you don’t like….

For many adults, some under protest, going back to the office is now expected or is at the least being discussed. It is almost as if we have all been playing these last several months and it is now time to play grown-up again in suits and/or high heels.

The reality is so different.  In this time of celebrating workers, we are coming out of what can feel like years of working at home after all the initial adjustments that were required to do just that. It really addresses the ability of humans to adapt and the exquisite skills of our workers. So many protested staying home since their home life wasn’t conducive to being productive.

Now those same people are protesting going back to the office since being at home has become a new norm.  They have remembered the gift of family life, the gift of those they are in a relationship with, and the gift of time that used to be spent commuting that can now be spent working out, playing with their children, or simply finding balance. We are certainly all amazing creatures who deserve to be celebrated. In spite of everything, we keep it going to the best of our abilities, adapting as we go.

Let us remember this year, however, that we, not our careers, are the most important thing in life. May that one major realization be the gift of all these changes we have undergone.

These quotes can support us in remembering wisdom, and the far bigger picture. We, our wellbeing, and our passion need to be the focus:

“The individual who says it is not possible should move out of the way of those doing it.”                                                                                   Tricia Cunningham

Take rest.  A field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.
                                   Ovid

A blessed long weekend of celebrating you, and those you love.

Dorothy
